Kent Center, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that provides highly personalized 24-hour a day services for adults who have a broad spectrum of developmental disabilities, such as autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual and/or physical disabilities, which may include complex medical issues. We operate 14) residential homes as well as in-house Day Habilitation and Supported Employment Programs. Kent Center currently serves 76 people and has a growing waiting list.  Since 1970, the mission of Kent Center has been to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone receiving services; treat them with respect and dignity; provide enriching opportunities and choices.  Kent Center's continuing goal is to assist individuals receiving services to independently live, work, and positively contribute to and participate in their community to the greatest extent of their abilities.

The ideal driver candidate will assist in the very important work we do by providing transportation to outings in the community providing transportation to work and/or other activities for the individuals we support.

We provide PAID classroom training to include: DDA, CMT, CPR/First Aide Certification, and Crisis prevention; and on the job training and tools you need to be successful in this position.

Applicants must:

  • Complete (2) weeks full-time (days) of consecutive orientation/on-the-job training (within the first month of employment).
  • Successfully pass associated tests post hire.
  • Complete DSP 1&2 training or test for and pass DSP 1&2 certification within first year of employment.
  • Be capable of performing CPR/First Aid and follow MANDT standards for crisis intervention.

  • Commit to having a high level of reliability by being punctual.
  • Demonstrate time management (Bus Drivers are schedule keepers. Make sure they are picked up and dropped off at a timely fashion.)
  • Demonstrate Empathy (Some Individuals are very sensitive to their fragility, impaired, in pain, nonverbal or high behavior and need help. Being sympathetic to their needs and understanding is necessary.)
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills (Bus Driver work in a very personal way with their individuals.)
  • Demonstrate patience (Some Individuals take more patience then others and we need people with the ability to have patience and to encourage the individual to take as much time as they need to finish a task.)
  • Maintain a professional presence in image and interactions to include a clean, appropriate and presentable appearance;
  • Maintain an attitude of cooperativeness, flexibility, respectfulness, and honesty;
  • Treat our individuals supported with respect and dignity while provide enriching opportunities and choices;
  • Ability to think critically, have basic problem-solving skills, and good judgement;
  • Be self-directed and demonstrate patience, and
  • Ability to receive instruction and implement policies/procedures as trained.

Shift/Schedule: Part-time 20-hrs per week. Base schedule of Monday Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and then 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Actual time of van run depends on traffic, weather and number of people we support on the van.

Location: Chestertown and the surrounding area.

Pay Rate:  Training Rate: $11.00/hr. Base Rate: $12.79/hr.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to pass 8th grade math and reading test.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Must pass a criminal history record check, drug screen, and submit to a driving record.
  • Must be in good health and have the physical ability to lift without accommodation.
  • Ability to drive at night and during inclement weather.
  • Must possesses excellent oral and writing communication skills, including an excellent command of English.
